Results

While individual results may vary, Dysport generally provides results that last for about four months.

Dysport is a common treatment performed by plastic surgeons to relax wrinkles and smoothen skin. While any physician can perform an injection, plastic surgeons have the highest level of training and skill in regenerative treatments.

Recovery after Dysport treatment is typically minimal, and most individuals can resume their normal activities immediately following the procedure.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROCEDURE

The process of getting a Dysport injection typically involves the following steps:

Consultation: Your first step is to schedule your consultation. During the consultation, you will discuss your concerns, goals, and medical history. Dr. Domanski or Aesthetic Injector Jen, will assess your suitability for Dysport treatment and explain the procedure, including potential risks and benefits.

Preparation: Dr. Domanski or Injector Jen, will cleanse the treatment area and may apply a topical numbing cream if necessary. Alternatively, an ice pack may be used to improve comfort.

Injection: Dr. Domanski, or our expert Injector Jen, will use a fine needle to inject Dysport into the targeted muscles or treatment areas. The number of injections and the amount of Dysport used will depend on your specific needs and treatment plan. You may feel a slight pinching or stinging sensation during the injections, but any discomfort is usually minimal.

Post-treatment care: After the injections, an ice pack may be applied to the treated areas to minimize swelling and bruising. Specific aftercare instructions, such as avoiding pressure on the treated areas, refraining from strenuous activities for a specified period, and any other relevant guidelines, will be provided.

Follow-up and maintenance: Depending on your goals, you may schedule a follow-up appointment to assess the results and discuss any further treatments or adjustments. Dysport typically lasts for several months, so regular maintenance treatments may be necessary to maintain the desired outcome.

BENEFITS

Dysport is a common treatment performed by plastic surgeons to relax wrinkles and smoothen skin. While any physician can perform an injection, plastic surgeons have the highest level of training and skill in regenerative treatments. There are multiple benefits of dysport:

Reduction of wrinkles: Dysport is commonly used to minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles, particularly frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), lateral to the eyes (crowsfeet) and in the forehead. It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause these wrinkles, resulting in a smoother and more youthful-looking appearance.

Non-surgical treatment: Dysport offers a non-invasive alternative to surgical procedures, such as facelifts or brow lifts, for individuals seeking to address the signs of aging. It is administered through injections, which are generally quick and relatively painless.

Quick results: The effects of Dysport can often be seen within a few days to a week after treatment, with optimal results usually appearing within two weeks. This fast onset of action makes it an attractive option for those looking for rapid improvements.

Long-lasting effects: While individual results may vary, Dysport generally provides results that last for about four months. Regular maintenance treatments can help sustain the desired outcomes over time.

Treatment for muscle-related conditions: Dysport is also approved for therapeutic uses, such as treating muscle spasticity such as masseter spasm. Dysport works by blocking the release of chemicals that cause muscle contractions, thereby providing relief to individuals with these conditions.

Customizable treatment: The dosage and administration of Dysport can be tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient. This allows plastic surgeons to adjust the treatment based on factors such as the area being treated, the severity of the wrinkles or muscle condition, and individual patient characteristics.

CANDIDATES

Dysport is primarily used for the treatment of wrinkles and muscle-related conditions in various areas of the face and neck. Here are some common locations that are often targeted with Dysport:

Glabellar lines: Glabellar lines, also known as frown lines or “11” lines, are vertical lines that appear between the eyebrows. Dysport is frequently used to relax the muscles responsible for these wrinkles, resulting in a smoother appearance.

Forehead lines: Dysport can be used to treat horizontal lines that appear on the forehead when the frontalis muscle contracts. By injecting Dysport into specific points of the forehead, the muscle activity is temporarily reduced, leading to a reduction in the visibility of these lines.

Crow’s feet: Crow’s feet are the fine lines and wrinkles that radiate from the outer corners of the eyes. Dysport injections can help relax the muscles around the eyes, minimizing the appearance of crow’s feet and creating a more youthful look.

Bunny lines: Bunny lines are diagonal lines that form on the upper part of the nose when the nasalis muscle contracts. Dysport can be used to soften these lines by reducing muscle activity in that area.

Neck bands: Dysport can be used off-label to treat the vertical bands that sometimes form on the neck due to muscle contractions. Injecting Dysport into the platysma muscle can help relax it and reduce the visibility of these bands.

Hyperhidrosis: Dysport has shown effectiveness in reducing excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in areas such as the underarms, palms, and soles. It works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that stimulates sweat gland activity.

Migraine headaches: Some studies suggest that Dysport injections may help alleviate symptoms associated with chronic migraine headaches. It is believed to work by relaxing the muscles and reducing the frequency and severity of migraines.

Facial asymmetry: Dysport can be used off-label to address facial asymmetry caused by muscle imbalances. By selectively injecting Dysport into specific muscles, the symmetry of the face can be improved.

Gummy smile: Dysport can be used to treat a “gummy smile,” where excessive gum tissue is exposed when smiling. Injecting Dysport into specific muscles around the upper lip can help relax them, resulting in a more balanced smile.

TMJ disorders: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can cause pain and discomfort in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Dysport injections may be used to help relieve muscle tension and reduce symptoms associated with TMJ disorders.

Lip Flip: Unlike lip fillers, which add volume to the lips, a lip flip focuses on improving the shape and position of the upper lip without significantly increasing its size. During a lip flip procedure, a small amount of neurotoxin is injected into the orbicularis oris muscle, which surrounds the mouth. This muscle controls the movement of the lips. The neurotoxin temporarily relaxes the muscle, causing the upper lip to roll slightly upward. As a result, more of the upper lip becomes visible, creating the illusion of a fuller and more pronounced upper lip.

RECOVERY

Recovery after Dysport treatment is typically minimal, and most individuals can resume their normal activities immediately following the procedure. Here are some common aspects to consider regarding the recovery process:

Immediate post-treatment effects: After receiving Dysport injections, you may experience some temporary side effects at the injection sites, such as redness, swelling, or mild bruising. These effects are usually mild and resolve quickly within a few hours to a few days.

Avoiding pressure on the treated areas: It is generally recommended to avoid applying pressure to the treated areas for at least 24 hours following the procedure. This includes avoiding rubbing or massaging the treated areas to prevent the spread of the medication to unintended muscles.

Resuming regular activities: In most cases, you can resume your regular activities immediately after Dysport treatment. There are typically no restrictions on exercise or strenuous activities.

Onset and duration of results: The effects of Dysport typically begin to appear within a few days to a week, with optimal results achieved after approximately two weeks. The duration of the results can vary but generally lasts around three to four months. Regular maintenance treatments may be recommended to sustain the desired outcome.

Possible side effects: While rare, there can be potential side effects associated with Dysport treatment. These can include headache, temporary eyelid drooping, or injection site pain or discomfort. These are rare and generally get better on their own.

Follow-up appointments: Depending on your treatment plan and goals, your healthcare professional may schedule a follow-up appointment to assess the results and discuss any further treatment options or adjustments.
