Thigh lifts are an outpatient procedure and patients go home the same day.

A thigh lift, also known as thighplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the thighs by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the remaining tissue.

A good candidate for a thigh lift is typically an individual who is bothered by the appearance of their thighs due to excess skin, fat, or sagging tissue and desires a more toned and proportionate contour.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROCEDURE

On the day of a thigh lift surgery, several steps and activities typically take place. Here’s an overview of what to expect:

Preoperative preparations: Upon arriving at the surgical facility or hospital, you will be directed to the preoperative area. Here, you will change into a surgical gown, and the medical staff will review your medical history and ensure that you are ready for the procedure. An intravenous (IV) line may be inserted to administer fluids and medications. Your surgeon, Dr. Domanski, will review the goals of your surgery and mark the areas of the thigh to be addressed.

Anesthesia administration: Before the surgery begins, you will be administered anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Your team will ensure that you are comfortable, safe, and fully asleep. The operating room team will then perform a time out, to confirm the procedure, and that appropriate antibiotics and other medications have been administered.

Incision placement: Once you are properly anesthetized, Dr. Domanski will begin the thigh lift procedure. The specific incision pattern will depend on the extent of correction needed and the areas being treated. Typically, incisions are made in the groin area and can extend along the inner thigh or around the back of the thigh, depending on the surgical plan.

Tissue removal and tightening: Excess skin and fat are carefully removed from the thighs using the incisions. The underlying tissue may also be tightened and reshaped to improve the contours of the thighs. Liposuction may be used in combination with the thigh lift to enhance the results further.

Incision closure: After excess thigh tissue is removed, Dr. Domanski will meticulously close the incisions using absorbable sutures. He will ensure proper alignment and tension for optimal healing and minimal scarring. A drain may be used to help fluid removal and speed healing.

Dressing and compression garments: Once the incisions are closed, the surgical sites will be dressed with bandages or dressings. You will be instructed you to wear compression garments on the treated thighs to minimize swelling, decrease fluid accumulation, and support the healing process.

Postoperative recovery: After the procedure is complete, you will be taken to the recovery area where you will be closely monitored after anesthesia. The medical staff will provide instructions on postoperative care, including pain management, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments. Thigh lifts are an outpatient procedure and patients go home the same day.

BENEFITS

A thigh lift, also known as thighplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the thighs by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the remaining tissue. This procedure offers several benefits to individuals who are bothered by sagging or loose skin in the thigh area:

Improved body contour: A thigh lift can enhance the contour and shape of the thighs, resulting in a more toned and proportionate appearance. It helps address issues such as excess skin, flabbiness, and irregular contours, particularly in the inner and outer thigh areas.

Removal of excess skin and fat: Weight loss, aging, and genetics can contribute to loose skin and fat deposits in the thighs. A thigh lift can remove this excess skin and fat, providing a smoother and more youthful appearance.

Increased self-confidence: Many people feel self-conscious about the appearance of their thighs, particularly when wearing certain types of clothing or engaging in activities that expose their legs. By improving the shape and firmness of the thighs, a thigh lift can boost self-confidence and body image.

Enhanced mobility and comfort: Excess skin in the thighs can cause discomfort, irritation, and chafing, especially during physical activities or when wearing tight clothing. A thigh lift can alleviate these issues, allowing for increased mobility, comfort, and the ability to participate in various physical activities without discomfort.

Long-lasting results: While aging and natural body changes will continue to occur after a thigh lift, the results of the procedure are long-lasting. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, individuals can sustain the improvements achieved through a thigh lift.

CANDIDATES

A good candidate for a thigh lift is typically an individual who is bothered by the appearance of their thighs due to excess skin, fat, or sagging tissue and desires a more toned and proportionate contour. Good candidate for a thigh lift will often have some of the following characteristics:

Excess skin and/or fat in the thigh area: Candidates often have loose or sagging skin in the inner or outer thigh region, typically resulting from weight loss, aging, or genetic factors. They may have difficulty improving the appearance of their thighs through exercise or non-surgical methods alone.

Stable weight: It is important for candidates to have reached a stable weight that they can maintain before considering a thigh lift. Significant weight fluctuations after the surgery can affect the results and may require additional procedures.

Good overall health: Candidates should generally be in good overall health to undergo surgery. This includes being free from any underlying medical conditions that could increase the risks associated with the procedure or hinder the recovery process.

Non-smoker: Smoking can interfere with the body’s healing process and increase the risks of complications. Candidates should be non-smokers or willing to quit smoking for a minimum of 4 weeks before and after the surgery.

Realistic expectations: It is important for candidates to have realistic expectations about the outcomes of a thigh lift, as well as the recovery.

Commitment to a healthy lifestyle: A thigh lift is not a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. Candidates should be committed to maintaining a stable weight, adopting a balanced diet, and engaging in regular exercise to preserve the results of the thigh lift and optimize their overall well-being.

RECOVERY

Patients may shower the day after surgery. Recovery time is usually one to two weeks. You will have to wear a compression garment for about four weeks. Recovery progresses in the following order:

Initial postoperative period: After the surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery area until the effects of anesthesia wear off. You will need to be driven home by a responsible adult. This adult should stay with you the first night after surgery. You may experience some grogginess and discomfort the night of surgery. Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed to manage pain and reduce the risk of infection.

Bandages and dressings: Your surgical incisions will be covered with bandages or dressings to protect them and promote healing. Dr. Domanski may place drainage tubes to remove excess fluid or blood from the surgical site. These drains will need to be emptied twice a day and typically be removed within a few days.

Compression garments: You may be instructed to wear compression garments or specialized supportive garments on the treated thighs. These garments help minimize swelling, promote proper healing, and provide support to the surgical area. The duration and frequency of wearing garments can vary between patients.

Swelling and bruising: Swelling and bruising are common after a thigh lift. Applying cold compresses or ice packs to the area can help reduce swelling during the initial days. Keeping your legs elevated while resting will help alleviate swelling.

Restricted activities: Initially, you will be advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise. Gradually, as you heal, you can gradually increase your activity level under your surgeon’s guidance. Dr. Domanski’s preference is for “pain guided recovery.” Patients are generally allowed to do activities that do not hurt. We recommend patient listen to their bodies.

Wound care: Proper wound care is essential for optimal healing. We recommend our patients wash their wounds with soap and water. We allow patients to shower a couple days after surgery as we are comfortable with our thigh lift incision closures.

Follow-up appointments: Follow up appointments are at 1 week, 3 weeks, and 3 months. The first appointment is to remove any drains and to ensure there are no signs of infection. The second appointment evaluates if compression garments can be discontinued and looks for any seromas or fluid collections. The final appointment serves as a debrief: to review the results and progress made.
