Can dermal fillers make you look older?
Written by Mark Domanski, MD
Dermal fillers are a great non-surgical treatment to treat loss of facial volume. Frequent uses are the cheeks, lips, nasal-labial lines, smile lines, and the non-surgical nose-job. However, sometimes fillers can make a patient look worse. Here are common reasons why:
Too much filler
• Like a kid learning to spell “banana,” the most important aspect of filler treatment is knowing when to stop.
• For example, I do not inject more than 1 cc of filler into the lip in each session.
Patient insists in unusually placement
• Some patients request unusual filler technique after viewing a social media video. Well, if it works so well, why isn’t it a standard technique?
Too frequent filler
• Most fillers last 9-12 months. While some patients may desire a more frequent top-off, too much filler too frequently can look unnatural. The practice makes money on fillers, so when your surgeon does not want to inject another filler, there is a good reason.
Too superficial
• Filler is supposed to be placed under the skin, not into it. When filler is placed too superficial, the filler may cause light to scatter, resulting in a bluish or grayish tint under the skin. Thankfully, such filler can be dissolved with Hyaluronidase.
Brusing
• In many areas of the face, I will use a cannula technique that decreases the need for entry points. The result is a more comfortable, safer technique. The cannula will bypass blood vessels, and less bruising is the result.
