What’s the hardest plastic surgery to recover from?
Written by Mark Domanski, MD
Plastic Surgery Recovery Varies Widely by Procedure
Plastic surgery recovery isn’t the same for every procedure, and some operations are far more physically and emotionally demanding than others. Factors like pain level, length of healing time, swelling, body area, and the impact on daily life all play a role in how tough recovery can be. This raises an important question: what’s the hardest plastic surgery to recover from?
To be honest, it is hard to answer a question like this because so much is based on individual patient characteristics. In general, facial procedures are easier to recover from than body procedures, and combined procedures require more recovery than single procedures.
Plastic Surgery Procedure Recovery Guide
From easiest to hardest, here is a general guide of plastic surgery procedure recovery. This is based on my experience with my patients. Creating a list was challenging because some of these procedures have similar recovery rates. However, people keep asking what is the easiest to hardest plastic surgeries to recover from, so I made this list as a general guide:
- Upper eyelid lift (upper blepharoplasty)
- Rhinoplasty
- Otoplasty (ear pinning)
- Upper and lower eyelid lift 9upper and lower blepharoplasty)
- Breast lift
- Breast augmentation
- Neck lift (read about neck lift recovery tips)
- Abdominal liposuction, small volume
- Facelift
- Breast reduction
- Breast augmentation with lift
- Large volume liposuction
- Thigh lift
- Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
- Abdominoplasty with breast lift
- Abdominoplasty with breast lift and breast augmentation
- Lower body lift
Regardless, my goal is for all patients to be able to walk around the house a bit on the first day after surgery and be starting to get back to their life activities in two weeks, with resumption of their exercise routine at 6-8 weeks. My reason for this is simple: if it takes someone 6 months to “recover” from a plastic surgery, maybe we should be doing the surgery differently?
Main Goals for Every Procedure
As always, our goals are results, safety, and an easy recovery. As each patient is different, I can explain more in an in-person consultation.
