What does plastic surgery recovery really feel like?

Written by Mark Domanski, MD

One of the most common questions patients ask before deciding on any plastic surgery procedure is what their recovery time will look like—how long healing will take, when they can return to daily activities, and what to expect along the way. While recovery timelines vary depending on the specific procedure and individual healing factors, there are general guidelines that apply to most plastic surgery recoveries.

Below is an overview of what the typical recovery process may look like, helping set realistic expectations and support a smoother, more confident healing journey.

Day 0:

Most patients go home the same day after plastic surgery.  Because of our enhanced recovery after surgery protocol, our goal is for patients to have minimal pain the day of the procedure.  The evening after surgery is spent resting and relaxing.

Day 1-2:

Patients begin to move around the house.  We allow our aesthetic surgery patients to shower about this time.

Week 1:

Patients often have their first follow up appointment in the first 1-2 weeks after surgery.  The goal of this appointment is to ensure that healing is proceeding well and to answer patient questions.  Sutures and drains are removed about this time.

Week 2:

Our goal is for most patients to return to work within 2 weeks of their procedure.  This can be sooner for patients who can work from home, or later for patients that need to be on their feet all day.  Scar creams are begun about this time.

Week 6-8:

Patients are getting back to their workout routine and resuming all prior activities.

Month 2:

About this time, we have patients return to the office for a debrief visit.  How did we do?  What is a 10, what is an 8, and what is a 9.  Even if something is not a perfect 10, it is important for both the surgeon and the patient to recognize and understand this.

Months 3-12:

Incision lines continue to soften and fade during this time.  Results often continue to improve with time.
