1. To be Less Judgmental
I grew up thinking that there was a certain way to live life. Now I understand that reasonable people take different paths.
Maybe it was the patient that waited months to seek treatment for a skin cancer. What do I know about being that scared?
Maybe it was the gynecomastia patient that wanted a male breast reduction? What do I know about always wearing two t-shirts during the summer? I never avoided the pool or the beach.
Maybe it was the patient who wanted an otoplasty? Nobody made fun of my ears so whom am I to judge?
2. In our own communities, people live very different lives
One of the reasons I participate in plastic surgery ER call is that I am interested in the world around us. I learn about this world by meeting people from various walks of life.
There are people in our community that have personal assistants schedule their medical appointments. There are also those that ride the bicycle home in the middle of the night because they don’t have a car. Both get injured, and each wants to get better as quickly as possible. Both are good people.
Never Rush to do Today which can Reasonably be Done Tomorrow
How much botox or dysport? How much lip filler? My preference is to start slow and build up. We can always add more at another appointment.
Not sure about the size of a breast implant? We can always schedule another pre-operative appointment to make sure the patient is comfortable with their choice.
Not sure what is right for you? Time may shed light on what is best to be done. I think this statement holds true for many things in life.
