When I started my practice 9 years ago, I had a webpage about flying in for plastic surgery. I don’t anymore.
This is because I have come to understand that local is the way to go with plastic surgery. Plastic surgeons go to the same conferences, have access to the same instruments, and read the same medical journals. In our world, knowledge is not limited by geography.
Recovery Is Part of the Procedure
I believe that surgery does not end at the last suture, but rather when a patient has completed the recovery process. Thus, follow up appointments are a critical part of the care of the plastic surgery patient. While I find Zoom and telehealth useful, I am best able to teach a patient how to change a dressing in person. I suspect it will always be so.
So, when patients tell me they are from northern Virginia, DC, Maryland, I know that follow up will be easier. It’s easier to see a doctor close to where you live.
